Since you're using xorg-server-1.5.2, try using a minimal xorg.conf and let X setup as much as it can with auto detection.
...So I'm in the process of installing OS11.1 again. The xorg.conf that openSUSE 11.1 sets up always works. It properly detects both the chip and the monitor (a 32" 1080p HDTV), and sets up everything correctly out of the box.(minus my not being able to select 16/9 as the aspect ratio, since when I select it from the drop-down, it goes back to 16/10, but it seems to work anyway), so... Since that works, should I still bother with the skeletal xorg.conf?
I generally recommend starting from a skeletal xorg.conf for xorg-server-1.5 since it significantly reduces the possibility of configuration glitches. It also makes the file easier to parse for all parties involved. But, if what you have now works, no need to change it unless you feel compelled to. On a final unrelated note, since you're running 2.6.30-rc1, feel free to enable DRI and set AccelMethod to EXA to enjoy accelerated EXA and Xv.
