More about the issue:
- it is present with radeonhd with EXA enabled,
- it is not present with radeonhd with EXA disabled,
- it is not present with radeon with EXA enabled.
I used latest randeonhd and radeon drivers from git master branch, with
latest drm modules from git r6xx-r7xx-support branch.
For now, I'm happy with the radeon driver :-)

Same issue here with a Radeon HD 3870 (RV670 ?), KDE 4.2.x
(desktop effects disabled) and latest radeonhd and drm from git
with DRI enabled.
I didn't experiment this problem when I was using radeonhd 1.2.4
(without the r6xx/r7xx acceleration support).
Did you exchange other packages as well (e.g. the Xserver)?
Matthias
I didn't exchange any other package : only the drm kernel modules
(from the r6xx-r7xx-support branch) and the radeonhd driver (from
the master branch).
BTW, I am running Kubuntu 8.10 (intrepid) AMD64 on all of my
computers.
