Just reporting that I installed the git code, and even 2D performance is pretty poor. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if this should be expected.

There is no acceleration code on the master branch for your chip. The acceleration code for r6xx/r7xx chips (including yours) is only available on the r6xx-r7xx-support branch of radeonhd and it requires the r6xx-r7xx-support branch of the drm kernel modules.
