Which, of course, doesn't exactly help you. I don't remember whether we have an RS740 here. Is anybody using it successfully?
I see exactly the same thing with an HD2400 (rv610 ?) running on an Alpha ev67 machine. I reported this to bug #15521 (http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15521 ) originally thinking it was linked to the underlying problem reported therein. I now know it is not. I am now able to run the latest xserver (1.5.3) and the problem remains. I have also verified that the ati driver works correctly! The xserver comes up and I was able to use it for an evening without any problems (other than problems in switching to the virtual terminals). If desired I can email to the list Xorg logs for both the radeonhd and the ati drivers.
