in theory i have implemented AC3 pass through, but since i don't have an
AV decoder i wasn't able to test it.

Could you provide some additional informations?
Wich Distribution, Kernel and alsa Version are you using?
In your xorg log file you should see something like this:
(II) RADEONHD(0): RHDHdmiUpdateAudioSettings
Followed by the IEC60958 status bits alsa send us, could you send me
those?
