I just got this new workstation card, which wasn't fully recognized by
the radeonhd driver (prompting this email).

Hmm - that's the same card as is in the Thinkpad T60p, which I'm typing
this on now (and I know some of the developers have).

1) Mouse pointer distortions. The mouse pointer will flicker sometimes
showing horizontal lines flashing beside it and sometimes through.

This one's an old bug that's well known but I've never seen a good
explanation for:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13405

2) somewhat slow performance.

tied to...

3) 3d performance isn't working so well.

The 2D acceleration is done by the 3D engine, so with no 3D the 2D
(esp. scrolling) sucks.

4) Various warnings and errors in the startup log, copied below
(started with EXA acceleration):

I don't know enough to parse the details of the dump, but looks like
hardware DRM is failing over to software rendering. Given that it's an
unknown ID, I'd bet that the driver just can't quite figure out how to
initialize things. Perhaps there's a different Chip ID for the desktop
FGL v5200 than the laptop one?

Maybe you can lie to the driver and tell it that it's really the latop
version. Back before ATI's proprietary fglrx driver knew about my
laptop, I could force the issue by claiming it was really an X1600, by
adding "ChipID 0x71c5" to the xorg.conf "Device" statement. The
Mobility v5200 is ChipID 0x71c4, perhaps try that instead and pretend to
be a laptop?
