It was in Wide mode.  When I changed it to zoom and restart X there was no
difference.  I then changed to normal mode and restart X.  The picture was
squeezed but the overall problem was the same --> image is larger than monitor
in all modes.

Note that in wide mode, fglrx works well.  Haven't tried fglrx with zoom or
normal.
