Since _ is alphanumeric :-P and DVI-A is rather uncommon, it would be reasonable to use DVI_A(-1) - given that most of the time the -1 would be skipped anyway. Another alternative would be DVIA(-1).
Well, the proper connector name is "DVI-A" and "DVI-I" and "DVI-D", right? Well... among DVI-A DVI-I DVI-D DVI-1 DVI-2 DVI-3 DVI-A_1 DVI_2 DVI_3 DVI_A-1 DVI-2 DVI-3 I'd prefer
I'd like to use dashes for numbering, that's what all other drivers use, and it also looks most "separatingly".
How about we use the naming schema "all other drivers use"? For the one potential future special case where someone does use a split DVI-I connector and lets it the card transmit different content over its digital and anlog pins, we would require an xorg.conf option and then just append /analog and /digital to the respective strings, whatever they may look like?
If people don't like the '_' I'd suggest to use ':' instead. Like: DVI-A:1
For me this groups A:1 together, something we certainly don't want to indicate.
I'd like to avoid "A:1" that as well. -- Hans Ulrich Niedermann
