Thanks everyone who responded. My issue seems to be Bug 16929. Turning off 
RandR fixed the problem. It might be notable that I tried fglrx, but that 
completely hung my machine. My monitor did not turn off--it was receiving a 
signal, but the signal was just a blank screen. With the radeonhd driver no 
signal was detected by the monitor.

Brandon, can you remove the reference to the monitor section from the 
screen section?

If that fails, please try a newer version of our driver, loads of code 
went in since opensuse 11 was released.
