I have a Sapphire 3870HD. From lspci:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device 9501
(prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: PC Partner Limited Unknown device e620
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 5
Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
Memory at fdbe0000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
I/O ports at de00 [size=256]
Expansion ROM at fdbc0000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [58] Express Legacy Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [a0] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+
Queue=0/0 Enable-
I'm not sure when this will get 2d/3d support. glxgears, for example, says
410 frames per second, which seems awfully slow. I could justify that speed
nearly solely on the 2.5GHz 64-bit CPU.
Which DRM? The kernel modules (dri.sf.net) or the library
(dri.freedesktop.org)? I don't have the modules (not sure if they're needed),
but I do have libdrm at 2.3.1.
As for mesa, I have 7.1 rc3, which seems to have a configuration available for
radeon, but not radeonhd, based on what options Gentoo is giving me. (Same
goes for dri.sf.net DRM.)

Now that we have 2d and 3d acceleration we should probably update that
message. What it really means AFAIK is "the driver did not recognize
your card as one which required non-standard treatment of display
outputs".

The 3d issue is more likely to be related to the mesa and drm drivers
than radeonhd itself. Can you pastebin your x log and xorg.conf files
and let us know which versions of drm and mesa you are running ?

Subject: [radeonhd] 0x7147:0x174B:0x0850: <Sapphire Radeon X1550>
To whom it may concern:
My new video card, identified by lspci as: 01:00.0 VGA compatible
controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV505 [Radeon X1550 64-bit], produces
the following message in the Xorg log.
(II) RADEONHD(0): Unknown card detected: 0x7147:0x174B:0x0850.
If - and only if - your card does not work or does not work
optimally
please contact radeonhd@xxxxxxxxxxxx to help rectify this.
Use the subject: 0x7147:0x174B:0x0850: <name of board>
and *please* describe the problems you are seeing
in your message.
(--) RADEONHD(0): Detected an RV505 on an unidentified card
(II) RADEONHD(0): Mapped IO at 0x7f951a607000 (size 0x00010000)
(II) RADEONHD(0): Getting BIOS copy from legacy VBIOS location
(II) RADEONHD(0): ATOM BIOS Rom:
SubsystemVendorID: 0x174b SubsystemID: 0x0850
IOBaseAddress: 0xe000
Filename: PC8514SA.002
BIOS Bootup Message:
X1550 RV505le Rialto 256mb DDR2 BIOS 550e/400m Channel AB
It also produces this line:
(WW) RADEONHD(0): Option "DRI" is not used
The result is that the card is not working as it should. glxgears
gives only 150.642 FPS.
My suspicion is that the new radeonhd driver just doesn't recognize my
card. It is a Sapphire Radeon X1550 256M DDR2 AGP VGA/TVO/DVI-I.
