There's no lockup in my case. Xorg starts and I can switch back and forth to
the console (which may be flickering sometimes). But I only see a moiré image
of colorful lines.

Joao, can you try to boot with only one memory module? As I said earlier, on my
machine, if I have more than one module I can't use neither the kernel
framebuffer nor Xorg (the vesa driver and the catalyst one doesn't work).
I've made a bug report on the linux kernel bugzilla about that:

Egbert, I'll post the VGA Bios dump. It's been made using the catalyst driver,
I hope that did not trouble the result. If it's the case, just re-ask.
