According to this log the Xserver at least didn't lock up.
Okay, but why does the system freezes when launching xorg ?
Also the chip ID you need has been added so no need for an override any more.

According to the log you also have an external DVI connected.
That's strange because the laptop is actually naked : I've only connected ethernet and power supply.
Can you describe what you see on the laptop panel and the external screen?
The screen just becomes black, and nothing else.
From the log there seems to be a problem with the laptop panel, to look into this I would need a dump of your video BIOS. You can use 'rhd_conntest 1:0.0 -d' to obtain this. You'd have to get the latest one from git though as the PCI Ids have just been added.
