Personally, I would even put extra before updates, but that's probably

Perhaps this is a Ubuntu-specific bug? I'm a little out of my league here,
but depmod is controlled by configuration files in /etc/depmod.d. I'm
running a stock Ubuntu 8.04 system (ah, except for all the updated graphics
drivers, of course) and in that directory there is one file,
/etc/depmod.d/ubuntu.conf, which contains:
# more /etc/depmod.d/ubuntu.conf
search updates ubuntu built-in
I would very much consider this an Ubuntu-specific bug. The default to
install an out-of-kernel compiled module is extra/, that should
definitely in the search list.
