I see not white blooming under those circumstances, but black screen and
flickering white horizontal stripes, as if synchronization problems. (X1400,
ThinkPad T60 internal TFT panel).

Switching back and forth between broken text mode and radeonhd-X11 a few times
usually gives me a working text mode some time.
