Interesting finds, Martin, thanks!
To your observations I'd like to add that fglrx also has problems calculating
the DPI: when my external monitor is not attached, the login screen looks weird
(text boxes for login/pass and the font inside them are too big). But at the
same time, when I log in, KDE thinks my external monitor is attached
(workspaces appear wide)
