[radeonhd] Don't know how to begin using driver

I want to use RadeonHD as a driver in the absence of a driver that can use
acceleration, but the documentation explains very little. I got the source
code from ftp://ftp.freedesktop.org/pub/individual/driver/, but the only
instructions I'm given is:
$ ./autogen.sh
$ make
$ make install
First of all, autogen.sh is impossible, because there's no such file with the
code, so I tried ./configure. Make and make install doesn't say very much
either, like restarting X or Linux for anything to take effect. When I
rebooted, I didn't see any evidence of a new driver taking effect.
I should probably explain why I need RadeonHD. I have an HD2600Pro. I
downloaded the proprietary driver from ATI, but when acceleration is on, the
computer freezes when X starts. Some guys on a public forum declared the
problem to be a fault in the BIOS, and there is no BIOS upgrade available,
currently. They also recommended I try RadeonHD, but the available
documentation tells me very little.
