I've tried this with my Asus M2A-VM HDMI board and two DVI monitors. I can get
both to light up even when the output wasn't active at boot time and thus not
initialized during boot.
I was using an HDMI2DVI adaptor to drive the DVI monitor on the HDMI output. 
Do you have a DVI capable monitor available to you so that you can try this
with another display device?
