I have tried to configure dual head - and the kind[0] where you divide the gnome workspace on a superwide virtual desktop works fine. Now, what I'd really like is to be able to have individual workspaces on the monitors separately - while sharing the same Gnome and X session. For example, I want to be able to show workspace 1 on the left monitor while I see workspace 2 on the next. I would also like to be able to switch workspaces individually on each monitor.
This only depends on the window manager. For fvwm2 (my WM) I gave up. You can sort-of fake it by configuring two screens, but then you cannot move windows between the two screens.
[0] Dual head terminology in X is a absolute maze of weird words meaning almost but not exactly the same thing.
Agreed.
