Ok, I commented out my custom modeline in my xorg.conf so now I'm back to the default state $ xrandr --verbose Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1680 x 1050, maximum 3600 x 1200 VGA_1 disconnected (normal) Identifier: 0x43 Timestamp: -1031982007 Subpixel: unknown Clones: PANEL DVI-D_1 CRTCs: 0 1 RANDR_OUTPUT_NUMBER: 1 (0x00000001) RANDR_PANNING_AREA: RANDR_CONNECTOR_NUMBER: 1 (0x00000001) RANDR_CONNECTOR_TYPE: VGA RANDR_SIGNAL_FORMAT: VGA PANEL connected 1680x1050+0+0 (0x46) normal (normal) 444mm x 277mm Identifier: 0x44 Timestamp: -1031982007 Subpixel: unknown Clones: VGA_1 DVI-D_1 CRTC: 0 CRTCs: 0 1 RANDR_OUTPUT_NUMBER: 2 (0x00000002) RANDR_PANNING_AREA: RANDR_CONNECTOR_NUMBER: 2 (0x00000002) RANDR_CONNECTOR_TYPE: LVDS RANDR_SIGNAL_FORMAT: LVDS 1680x1050 (0x46) 119.0MHz h: width 1680 start 1728 end 1760 total 1840 skew 0 clock 64.7KHz v: height 1050 start 1053 end 1059 total 1080 clock 59.9Hz DVI-D_1 connected 1680x1050+0+0 (0x49) normal (normal) 519mm x 324mm Identifier: 0x45 Timestamp: -1031982007 Subpixel: unknown Clones: VGA_1 PANEL CRTC: 1 CRTCs: 0 1 RANDR_OUTPUT_NUMBER: 3 (0x00000003) RANDR_PANNING_AREA: RANDR_CONNECTOR_NUMBER: 3 (0x00000003) RANDR_CONNECTOR_TYPE: TMDS RANDR_SIGNAL_FORMAT: TMDS 1920x1200 (0x47) 154.0MHz +HSync -VSync h: width 1920 start 1968 end 2000 total 2080 skew 0 clock 74.0KHz v: height 1200 start 1203 end 1209 total 1235 clock 60.0Hz 1600x1200 (0x48) 161.0MHz -HSync +VSync h: width 1600 start 1709 end 1880 total 2160 skew 0 clock 74.5KHz v: height 1200 start 1203 end 1207 total 1245 clock 59.9Hz 1680x1050 (0x49) 147.0MHz -HSync +VSync h: width 1680 start 1787 end 1966 total 2252 skew 0 clock 65.3KHz v: height 1050 start 1053 end 1059 total 1089 clock 59.9Hz 1600x1000 (0x4a) 133.0MHz -HSync +VSync h: width 1600 start 1699 end 1869 total 2138 skew 0 clock 62.2KHz v: height 1000 start 1003 end 1009 total 1038 clock 59.9Hz 1280x1024 (0x4b) 159.8MHz -HSync +VSync h: width 1280 start 1375 end 1513 total 1746 skew 0 clock 91.5KHz v: height 1024 start 1027 end 1034 total 1078 clock 84.9Hz 1280x1024 (0x4c) 135.0MHz +HSync +VSync h: width 1280 start 1296 end 1440 total 1688 skew 0 clock 80.0KHz v: height 1024 start 1025 end 1028 total 1066 clock 75.0Hz 1280x1024 (0x4d) 109.0MHz -HSync +VSync h: width 1280 start 1361 end 1496 total 1712 skew 0 clock 63.7KHz v: height 1024 start 1027 end 1034 total 1063 clock 59.9Hz 1280x960 (0x4e) 101.8MHz -HSync +VSync h: width 1280 start 1358 end 1493 total 1706 skew 0 clock 59.6KHz v: height 960 start 963 end 967 total 996 clock 59.9Hz 1152x864 (0x4f) 108.0MHz +HSync +VSync h: width 1152 start 1216 end 1344 total 1600 skew 0 clock 67.5KHz v: height 864 start 865 end 868 total 900 clock 75.0Hz 1152x720 (0x50) 67.2MHz -HSync +VSync h: width 1152 start 1208 end 1327 total 1502 skew 0 clock 44.8KHz v: height 720 start 723 end 729 total 748 clock 59.9Hz 1024x768 (0x51) 78.8MHz +HSync +VSync h: width 1024 start 1040 end 1136 total 1312 skew 0 clock 60.1KHz v: height 768 start 769 end 772 total 800 clock 75.1Hz 1024x768 (0x52) 65.0MHz -HSync -VSync h: width 1024 start 1048 end 1184 total 1344 skew 0 clock 48.4KHz v: height 768 start 771 end 777 total 806 clock 60.0Hz 832x624 (0x53) 57.3MHz -HSync -VSync h: width 832 start 864 end 928 total 1152 skew 0 clock 49.7KHz v: height 624 start 625 end 628 total 667 clock 74.6Hz 800x600 (0x54) 49.5MHz +HSync +VSync h: width 800 start 816 end 896 total 1056 skew 0 clock 46.9KHz v: height 600 start 601 end 604 total 625 clock 75.0Hz 800x600 (0x55) 40.0MHz +HSync +VSync h: width 800 start 840 end 968 total 1056 skew 0 clock 37.9KHz v: height 600 start 601 end 605 total 628 clock 60.3Hz 640x480 (0x56) 31.5MHz -HSync -VSync h: width 640 start 656 end 720 total 840 skew 0 clock 37.5KHz v: height 480 start 481 end 484 total 500 clock 75.0Hz 640x480 (0x57) 25.2MHz -HSync -VSync h: width 640 start 656 end 752 total 800 skew 0 clock 31.5KHz v: height 480 start 490 end 492 total 525 clock 60.0Hz 720x400 (0x58) 28.3MHz -HSync +VSync h: width 720 start 738 end 846 total 900 skew 0 clock 31.5KHz v: height 400 start 412 end 414 total 449 clock 70.1Hz
Manually setting it to the native causes the display to go black. $ xrandr --output DVI-D_1 --mode 1920x1200
Again, please try xrandr --verbose --output DVI-D_1 --mode 1920x1200 and paste the output.
$ xrandr --verbose --output DVI-D_1 --mode 1920x1200 screen 0: 1920x1200 506x316 mm 96.28dpi crtc 1: 1920x1200 60.0 +0+0 "DVI-D_1" The screen still goes black doing this. So then I do $ xrandr --verbose --output DVI-D_1 --mode 1680x1050 crtc 1: disable screen 0: 1680x1050 442x276 mm 96.46dpi crtc 1: 1680x1050 59.9 +0+0 "DVI-D_1" Let there be light.
The log looks good, saying for DVI-D_1: (II) RADEONHD(0): Modeline "1920x1200"x60.0 154.00 1920 1968 2000 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +hsync -vsync (74.0 kHz)
OTOH - can you verify your Xserver version? There was one infamous sync polarity bug.
$ rpm -q xorg-x11-server-Xorg xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.3.0.0-42.fc8
Please try
xrandr --newmode 1920x1200_a 154.00 1920 1968 2000 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +hsync -vsync xrandr --newmode 1920x1200_b 154.00 1920 1968 2000 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 -hsync +vsync xrandr --addmode DVI-D_1 1920x1200_a xrandr --addmode DVI-D_1 1920x1200_b
(might need a newer xrandr for that, or try +HSync or +Hsync, and vice versa with vsync, even mixed cases).

and then setting
xrandr --verbose --output DVI-D_1 1920x1200_a
or 1920x1200_b, respectively.
$ xrandr --verbose --output DVI-D_1 --mode 1920x1200_a xrandr: cannot find mode 1920x1200_a Obviously from earlier error.
The following info from my Xorg.0.log seems highly suspicious:
(II) RADEONHD(0): Not using mode "1920x1200" (mode clock too high)
No, just the default non-reduced-blanking 1920x1200 has a too high clock rate.
