This is - to the best of my understanding - a RandR, and not a driver
related issue. Best to complain about it in a bug report, or on
xorg-devel.
You have to add the monitor with
Option "monitor-DVI-I_1/analog" "MyMonitor"
in the device section. The monitor referenced in the screen section is
ignored with RandR. This is a FAQ.
If you want to add new larger modes dynamically, you have to add
"Virtual" as described in the FAQ section of the radeonhd wiki.

xorg.conf. But why is it choosing a widescreen(?) resolution?! Wouldn't

Anyway, the main problem is that after uncommenting the HorizSync and

Another thing is that xrandr reports a maximum resolution of 1280x1280
but I'm sure that I used 1600x1200 before.
