The port is from October 17, there have been many bugfixes since then.
You can try the driver directly from the git repository after
installing the devel/git port :

first time : git clone
git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/xorg/driver/xf86-video-radeonhd
later : cd xf86-video-radeonhd ; git pull

first time : ./autogen.sh
later : ./configure or ./autogen.sh
./gmake
./gmake install (as root)

I've put my xorg.conf online at
http://home.tiscali.nl/rladan/radeonhd/xorg.conf.radeonhd
(this describes a laptop using the panel display).
