[radeonhd] What can these drivers do?

Dear developers
What can these initial drivers from Suse do?
It it not clear to me, why a new series of drivers have to be made. I
mean, there are already many supported ATi cards in X.
So does this mean, that when the initial Suse drivers gets 2D and 3D,
the xorg drivers will be depricated?
