Some progress!
I updated my Debian unstable x86_64 system with aptitude safe-upgrade and there was yet another xorg update available. I also checked the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and saw that it complained about double buffer, so i disabled dbe in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Now, X starts and I get a kdm screen, in some 800x600 format or something.
Starting KDE and the 800x600 resolution is still there, despite that my xorg.conf says 24-bits and 1600x1200. I change to 16-bits but no luck. Still 800x600.
Anyone with a clue?
(I also note that I have no 3D acceleration, as tested with glxinfo. But the resolution seems more important for now)
Thanks for any help!
