This is something I've never quite understood, not being a physical-layer guru. It seems quite arbitrary that one cannot packet-write a UDF-2.x filesystem on to write-once media under Linux.
I am no expert on the matter either, but I do not think that reason is not totally arbitrary. Writing to CD-R involves variable-sized packets while writing to CD-RW involves fixed-length packets. (Or is it the opposite?) The difference between the two methods is the reason why the Linux kernel hasn't (yet) included the ability to handle CD-R packets. There isn't much more I can say about this. Maybe some others with more background can comment.
