I have just double checked, and while 2.6.17.7 works, 2.6.16.27 does not. I have looked at the differences and it is not obvious which change was effective. External USB cases are usually a bad idea, in part because most the chipsets are buggy, in part because most people do not check the peak power rating of the case and the disk drive... No, there is no bad idea, is just because we use to format a udf DVD, cause we can carry the burner to everywhere, and the problem was fixed.!!! upgrading to a newer firmware version on my burners it also has more speed options over
