Jim, Just be aware that I wrote this for LinuxFromScratch, not Redhat, so I can't vouch for it there. However, you seem to have done what I would see as the right thing, and found the right patch...

Is 12x the right speed for your drive, info I found on the web conflicted 12x or 32x - but I would not have thought a slower speed would be a problem? You might want to try cutting the speed to 8 or 10x. And - /dev/hdd is write-permission?
