My guess is, / on the cd-rw is owned by root. When you mount a filesystem the permissions of the mountpoint are changed to the permissions of the root directory of the filesystem.
I see the same thing - the first thing I do after mounting a newly formatted cdrw is "chmod a+w /mnt/cdrw". Any chance you might change mkudffs and possibly cdrwtool to allow specifying the root dir permissions and ownership? I know "secure by default" is good thing, but I see udf/cdrw used mainly as a mega-floppy, not a secure medium. I can also see this becoming an FAQ, considering most users are not root (one would hope anyway). -Cory
