With your proposition, this would not be possible. Yes, it's stupid.
But not quite unrealistic, if your wrangling long cmd-lines and know the GNU toolchest / getopt.
My idea is to just take the chance to enlighten users when an error like that is detected.
Dunno where I came across it, but good interface technique says "confusing interface design is a bug".
Okay, I know I know, you can't always do anything about it, but think back to the days when guis first came out. People used to character interfaces used "return" to jump to the next input field. Then guis re-purposed it to mean "form finished", and introduced "tab" to jump to the next field. That STILL catches me out, and how long is it since I've used CUI forms? Ten years? (they're probably still out there, you know ... :-)
Ah... times...
Or click-through warnings? Because so many of them are meaningless, users miss the important ones.
Oh, indeed.
Okay, you might not be able to do too much about it here, but how many naive users would think of looking in the SHELL manual, to find out why the GREP command wasn't working? The problem is that many of us are *not* power users, using a system that *was* *designed* for power users. (I swear blue murder at MS Word for the opposite reason - designed for idiots and forced on power users :-)
