In which case, knode is broken and non-RFC-compliant. As Carlos says, any RFC-compliant mailer, upon coming across "dash dash space" on a line all by itself, will delete that line and everything else following it when you hit "reply" or "forward". And non-RFC-compliant mailers are a pain in the neck to everyone else. If yours is non-compliant, please ditch it.
