Actually, that was Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak. What Bill Gates did was sell IBM DOS, before he bought it from Seattle Computer Products, which in turn was based on and contained code from CP/M. It was IBM making it and almost completely open system that generated the clone market and mass acceptance.
