I think what JDD means, and I agree with him here, is that using syslog for debug is a bit of a kludge.
Well, syslog() has had the LOG_DEBUG level for decades. It may not be exactly "debug" messages, but simply an extensive audit trail.
Yes. It allows, for instance, tracking where an email went wrong, tracing how it went through the different daemons.
The information is different from the audit the authorities want for email: from, to, subject, date. At least, maybe all the headers. Dunno.
And debug messages do not flood /var/log/messages if you want. They would go to a different file, with earlier rotation. In case of email, it can be mail.debug, but the convention on openSUSE was /var/log/mail (there is mail.err and mail.info, maybe mail.warn)
You are making a very good case for there being a completely separate mechanism of DEBUG messaging from management messaging and audit trail messaging. -- A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
