I'm running 13.2; I installed today's online update, which included the security update for the kernel, and after rebooting I have no sound from the desktop. My usual desktop is KDE and in the Audio and Video Settings dialog in System Settings the Device Preference tab lists "Built-in Audio Analog Stereo" but it's grayed out and not selectable, and "Dummy Output", which is selectable but produces no sound; and in the Audio Hardware Setup tab the dropdown lists for Sound Card and Sound Device are empty. (I also tried another desktop and also another user, but in both cases still no sound.)

I then opened the Sound Configuration dialog in Yast and saw that my sound card was not configured; of course it had been configured before the update. I pressed Edit and chose the quick configuration, then tested the sound and heard the test melody. But still no sound in the desktop, also not after logging out and back in, and not even after rebooting again. But now the sound card configuration in Yast is still there and the test sound still works.

If anyone here knows what the problem could be or how else to try and diagnose it, I'd be grateful.

Exact same problem. If you right click the tray sound icon, and select setup, then select the backend tab, what do you have listed for backends?

Ok, it seems like something in the install trashed users / Groups such that I was no longer a member of either the audio and video groups.

I set that. And then rebooted and sound is back. I wonder what other groups i was turfed from.

I'm going to have to check my backups.
