Adding "nomodeset" does avoid the black-screen. Now it is left sitting at "Loading initial ramdisk..." from which it never proceeds using the 4.5.0-4.gece3ff2-default kernel. The 4.2.1 kernel books without issue - except, of course, the touchpad does not work.
Is something perhaps missing? When I rebuild the ram disk with mkinitrd the 4.2.1 image appears to build normally; but the 4.5.0 image fails to load a laundry list of modules: lenovo-s21:~ # mkinitrd Creating initrd: /boot/initrd-4.1.15-8-default Executing: /usr/bin/dracut --logfile /var/log/YaST2/mkinitrd.log - -force /boot/initrd-4.1.15-8-default 4.1.15-8-default dracut module 'plymouth' will not be installed, because command 'plymouthd' could not be found! dracut module 'plymouth' will not be installed, because command 'plymouth' could not be found! dracut module 'multipath' will not be installed, because command 'multipath' could not be found! dracut module 'multipath' will not be installed, because command 'multipath' could not be found! *** Including module: bash *** *** Including module: warpclock *** *** Including module: i18n *** *** Including module: ifcfg *** *** Including module: kernel-modules *** Omitting driver i2o_scsi *** Including module: resume *** *** Including module: rootfs-block *** *** Including module: terminfo *** *** Including module: udev-rules *** Skipping udev rule: 91-permissions.rules Skipping udev rule: 80-drivers-modprobe.rules *** Including module: haveged *** *** Including module: systemd *** *** Including module: usrmount *** *** Including module: base *** *** Including module: fs-lib *** *** Including module: shutdown *** *** Including module: suse *** *** Including modules done *** *** Installing kernel module dependencies and firmware *** *** Installing kernel module dependencies and firmware done *** *** Resolving executable dependencies *** *** Resolving executable dependencies done*** *** Hardlinking files *** *** Hardlinking files done *** *** Stripping files *** *** Stripping files done *** *** Generating early-microcode cpio image *** *** Constructing GenuineIntel.bin **** *** Store current command line parameters *** Stored kernel commandline: resume=UUID=350e6bf9-25a3-460a-b3d3-cf4b835ba1e2 root=UUID=246e86b5-fd63-4ee1-bedc-9e3fd9797be0 rootflags=rw,relatime,attr2,inode64,noquota rootfstype=xfs *** Creating image file *** *** Creating image file done *** Some kernel modules could not be included This is not necessarily an error: swap Creating initrd: /boot/initrd-4.5.0-4.gece3ff2-default Executing: /usr/bin/dracut --logfile /var/log/YaST2/mkinitrd.log - -force /boot/initrd-4.5.0-4.gece3ff2-default 4.5.0-4.gece3ff2-default dracut module 'plymouth' will not be installed, because command 'plymouthd' could not be found! dracut module 'plymouth' will not be installed, because command 'plymouth' could not be found! dracut module 'multipath' will not be installed, because command 'multipath' could not be found! dracut module 'multipath' will not be installed, because command 'multipath' could not be found! *** Including module: bash *** *** Including module: warpclock *** *** Including module: i18n *** *** Including module: ifcfg *** *** Including module: kernel-modules *** *** Including module: resume *** *** Including module: rootfs-block *** *** Including module: terminfo *** *** Including module: udev-rules *** Skipping udev rule: 91-permissions.rules Skipping udev rule: 80-drivers-modprobe.rules *** Including module: haveged *** *** Including module: systemd *** *** Including module: usrmount *** *** Including module: base *** *** Including module: fs-lib *** *** Including module: shutdown *** *** Including module: suse *** *** Including modules done *** *** Installing kernel module dependencies and firmware *** *** Installing kernel module dependencies and firmware done *** *** Resolving executable dependencies *** *** Resolving executable dependencies done*** *** Hardlinking files *** *** Hardlinking files done *** *** Stripping files *** *** Stripping files done *** *** Generating early-microcode cpio image *** *** Constructing GenuineIntel.bin **** *** Store current command line parameters *** Stored kernel commandline: resume=UUID=350e6bf9-25a3-460a-b3d3-cf4b835ba1e2 root=UUID=246e86b5-fd63-4ee1-bedc-9e3fd9797be0 rootflags=rw,relatime,attr2,inode64,noquota rootfstype=xfs *** Creating image file *** *** Creating image file done *** Some kernel modules could not be included This is not necessarily an error: scsi_dh hid_generic yenta_socket scsi_dh_rdac scsi_dh_emc scsi_dh_alua usbhid hid-apple hid-sunplus hid-cherry hid-logitech hid-logitech-dj hid-microsoft firewire-ohci pcmcia nvme hid-hyperv hv-vmbus sdhci_acpi virtio virtio_blk virtio_ring virtio_pci virtio_scsi xfs swap crc32c Update bootloader...
