Well, size of *directory* is 3.8MB indeed. When files are deleted directories do not shrink (at least in those filesystems I am ware of) so if you once had millions of files there and then deleted them directory size remains big.
I was about to respond when Andrei sent his message. He is correct. Some filesystems like Ext4 and UFS will not reclaim blocks when inode entries are removed. Overtime the directory size will grow. Don't worry about it. Some newer filesystems such as XFS will not grow with such behavior.
