You only have to wait for it if it was not done recently. /You/ know how to know you have to refresh, but as a default for most users, it is better to leave auto refresh on. Any way, I understand that the refresh first checks to see if the metadata timestamp has changed; if it hasn't, it doesn't waste time there.
