I then decided to re-install openSUSE 13.2 from DVD, and have now got a bootable system, but when I login as my user, the sequence stops after displaying the hard drive icon. i.e. no desktop, world, toolkit etc. I can do a graphical login as root (I know I shouldn't, and I shutdown the machine as soon as I'd seen that it worked), so what do I need to edit/delete in ~/bob to be able to load the KDE4 desktop.
Can you login in text mode to "bob"? Type "ls -l" and see if the files do belong to bob.
Good morning. Yes, I can login to bob, and everything is owned by bob. Some things are in group users and some things are in a group bob that I created some time ago (before the current troubles).
