It might depend on the algorithm. back in V7 days when there was no virtual memory and memory was short anyway, most algorithms were streaming and the use of pipes and filters with small programs tied together with shell scripts was the dominant style. Perhaps along the way, the GNU crowd have become lazy and tried to do in-memory processing. Which won't be good for, as you say, large archives. But with virtual memory surely the physical RAM isn't the issue?
