Why do you consider that odd? If the information isn't supplied ro the resolver (either from hosts file or from DNS -- see nsswitch.conf(5) -- then how are symbolic names going to be mapped to IP addresses, since IP addresses are the only thing that the network interface understands? The information has to come from somewhere and it can't come from the people who package Suse 'into the box' since they don't know about your, or mine, system and what's on the LAN.
