Will you please stop propagating this nonsense that maildir is non standard. Its a reliable standard that has been in use for getting on for 40 years, it long pre-dates Linux, long pre-dates UNIX on PCS.
----- 40 years? Not really
From my recall maildir came into being with djb's qmail in the late 90's / early 2000s
There were similar mailbox formats before that, but not maildir as described here:
http://www.qmail.org/qmail-manual-html/man5/maildir.html
and until then, sendmail and mbox WERE the standard
Maidir *as* *we* *know* *it* *today*[1] came with qmail, but the one-message-per-file and much of what got formalized by djb was in use by the MH before we had GUIs. MH was intended to be CLI and shell script friendly, the old "each thing does just one thing and does it well" approach; modern MUAs are very complex, feature-full and can have various problems and bugs. 40 years? [1] just like a lot of things that, as we know them today, such as KDE4, the USG standards and more. RFC822 has been revised and updated a number of times; to an implementer 822 shows a lot of holes and shortcomings and thet all needed clarification.
