Well, if his postfix is configured for maildir format in /var/spool/mail, but it isn't sendmail compliant. Also fetchmail can't store directly in that format as well as most clients that can't read it except through IMAP. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maildir)
Linda, the whole point of the shift to ~/Mail in the last century was to allow the expansion that came with maildir which isn't possible with /var/spool/mail/user.
There are many programs that can not read Maildir, notably Thunderbird. Pine could do it with a patch, that nowdays is part of the core (on Alpine). So for many years it could not. SpammAssassin sa-learn does not even mention maildir in the manual. Often the implementation of maildir used by one program is not compatible with the one used by another program, so that you can not, say, tell Kmail to just use a ~/Mail folder previously used by... dunno, evolution. On the other hand, an mbox file used by Thunderbird can be used by Pine or others (like sa-learn, procmail, etc), seamlessly. In that sense, mbox is a standard, and maildir is not. ;-) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)
