I have LXDE on an old machine here, and it is certainly not slow.
I'll finish the install and copy, then I reset the DM and see how the other desktops compare. Thanks for your help with the dd/clone issue. This install will be painful, but at least there will be no 512 sector alignment slowdowns.
There was no need to install new, if you did not want to do it. Just create suitable partitions, and copy over the files, using rsync, for instance. Then adjust fstab and grub entries, and install grub1/2 - that's all. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)
