Better to use:
Command options: --from
Select packages from the specified repository. Didn't I say
Of course you would also limit to the repo ....
Perhaps I should have been more explicit... As you have done.
With --from you don't need to specify individual packages to install, you only need specify the repo.
Now that strikes me as a high risk situation.
How can it be any more high risk then -f? If you want packages updated from a specific repo then you will know in advance that it will switch vendor and prompt you *before* proceding with the upgrade.
The normal 'zypper up' will tell you what its not going to install, but if I don't want most of those then I had damn well better specify the ONLY one(s) I do want. The "--force" does that, the "--from", as you point out, does not. It brings in things other than the one, the only one, I want.
No it doesn't. you can still specify an individual package if you so choose. Zypper (as far back as I can remember) has always accepted a specific package name as the one to install. Have you ever used:
zypper in --help zypper in
to get further help when using zypper?
I take it the "haven't you" refers to me. So long as this thread refers to careful and deliberate people like you and John and me, then we are arguing against each other pointlessly. The operative word here is 'careful'. The evidence of this list is that not everyone is careful about everything all the time. Sometimes I'm not careful about running a spell check before posting. My bad. Sometimes I'm not careful about backing up. OUCH! We're none of us perfect, and some of us are less perfect in some areas than other areas. Hopefully we learn from the experience of others. I've learnt enough to have never ever had a rpm-hell. Read back to my description of how I use "--force". Compare that with John's "anything". Some people might call my way of installing using BOTH "--force" *and* "--from" *and* specifying the exact revision of the package a 'belt and braces' approach. There's no question of 'finger trouble' such as a 'bounce' of the return key. If I mistype _anything_ there is a FAIL. I've watched others play 'loose and free' with configuration and set up; there are many 'evils' of Linux that, for example, immigrants from MS-Windows might practice such as running as root all the time, opening up permissions. You know the stuff[1]. Like turning on 'change vendor' and either forgetting to turn it off, for any number of reasons, or deliberately leaving it on because of the 'hassle' zypper presents .... So, you don't do that, John doesn't do that, and I don't do that. Great. Lets hope the noise of this thread alerts other people to the risk of RPM-hell that can arise if you don't pay attention to these kinds of details.
