To be clear, you mean that gnu ddrescue is an integration of the dd_rhelp script and smartctl? Or, are there more than one ddrescue apps?
smartctl? No, of course not. gnu ddrescue is a remake of dd_rescue and dd_rhelp by the gnu people. It probably will replace them, eventually.
The syntax is quite different, so read the manual first (I don't have it on memory).
I looked at http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ before writing OP. I just don't want to take an unfortunate next step and lose a rescue possibility I might have had otherwise.
You can use any of those two, either dd_rhelp or ddrescue. Whichever one you prefer or have. Me, I still use the first one, because I'm more familiar with its syntax. smartctl is not related to any of those. Read the wikipedia to find out what SMART is for. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T. And you should use it, too. - -- Cheers Carlos E. R.
