That was it. Did zypper dup on what was already there, took a snap just in case and bingo. It went fine.
Do we have any doco on dup in VM's? I ask because the dup on a non dup'd machine works fine. Maybe it is generally recommendable to dup from the newest possible version?
It is indeed recommended and documented :-) Here http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:System_upgrade, I think. Dup should be done from the previous release, and the install must be up to date.
