I am sick and tired of installing a fresh system every 18 months sop I was thinking of doing a "zypper dup" after switching the repos from 11.4 to 12.2.
Did you consider going Evergreen instead? On that I'm still sitting on the fence.
But I understand there are some changes (like Grub) that are quite significant. What is your advice. Could a "dup" work out right? Does this include switching to Grub 2?
The default bootloader changed to Grub2 for new installations. For new installations, Grub Legacy remains an option. An upgrade isn't supposed to change you to Grub2. If concerned, do 'zypper al grub2' first, and zypper won't attempt to install Grub2. If you have a system booting fine using Grub Legacy, odds are a switch to Grub2 will have zero net benefit *at best*. The usual recommendation is not to do an upgrade that skips over a release. Better to upgrade 12.1 first. The extra installation time may be less than time spent repairing things or restoring backups after an unsupported skipover upgrade, and likely less frustrating. You might want to consider another upgrade skip: 'zypper al systemd-init'. This *should* keep you on your existing init system instead of switching to the new default systemd, which still has some maturing to do even in Factory for 12.3/13.1. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
