[opensuse] 12.1 KDE3: What is spawning multiple instances of SCIM?

Using 12.1 with KDE3.5. When I start YaST2 it spawns multiple instances of SCIM manager and scim-panel-gtk. I count anywhere from 10 to 80 or so which starts slowing the system down with loads of 30 and higher. Sometimes multiple instances of SCIM are also spawned when starting konqueror, firefox, thunderbird. What is spawning so many instances of SCIM?
