Ok, I went to VLC backend on both my 64 bit machines and I can now get it to play. Of course, the VLC backend is inadequate because you cannot enable the equalizer when using it.
I am going to file a bug report, but should I file it upstream with bugs.kde.org, or with bugzilla.novell.com?
I was thinking of novell, because I have not seen any similar bug reports like this in bugs.kde.org. However, the bug surfaced when I upgraded to KDE 4.8.2, so that leads me to think I should file it with KDE. What is the best
BTW, I just noticed that I had responses on the thread I started a few weeks ago on a similar topic. I had thought there were no responses because they didn't show up in my inbox - it had gone in another directory on an old filter I had set up. So my apologies if it seemed like I was ignoring responses as I thought there were none. I have removed that filter now.

upgraded to KDE 4.8.2 on both my 64 bit machines, it will not play mp3
files. It does play on my 32 bit desktop. I have since upgraded to KDE
4.8.3 and installed the patches, but it still does not play.
<snippity-snip
Mine might not be the same problem, thought it seems at least similar.
The only way I could resolve it was to install and use the VLC backend
in phonon. Haven't been able to get either the gstreamer backend or the
xine backend to work properly in amarok (or in the digikam/gwenview
"Advanced Slideshow" with sound track, for that matter).
oS 12.1, 64-bit, KDE 4.8.3 (although the problem first showed up earlier
in the KDE 4.8 series).
