The OP mentioned the need to protect the data but no the OS.
using different strategies for different file systems is a capability of
LVM not enjoyed by RAID.
Really? Like, running RAID 1 on two filesystems and linear RAID to stitch
together a few left-over chunks of unpartitioned space into a single
filesystem (and, yes, I could have done the same with LVM), whilst other
filesystems on the same physical disks (which are not as critical) are not
RAIDed at all? All easily done with mdraid. Been doing it that way for years.
