Isn't this the point of this list, and the software we use (and some
create) and discuss here? Anyway, if someone doesn't like a sig (or a
post), move on. Its not the end of the world.
Amen to that.

To me, this whole discussion is both unfortunate and unnecessary.
Childish, even; and if there is a point to it, it is neither the point
nor the purpose of this list.

I wonder, too, if I'm the only one who sees a serious contradiction
between a proposal that sigs should be managed by regulation and the
founding mores of open source???

Unfortunately, this matter is not as childish as you think it is.

A person who contributed his experience and knowledge to these lists was
banned from these lists because of the signature he started to use. And
all because one person whinged to Henne. Here is the text of a post in
opensuse-offtopic, dated 12 March 2010, which saw quite a number of
people take their business elsewhere:

Hi Folks,

As you probably know, Fred has been removed from all openSuSE
mailing lists. While I don't use signatures myself, I feel that
the reaction to Fred's sig was overblown. I'm not religious myself,
but I've certainly had my oxen gored any number of times on this
list and others. Folks should just respect the opinions of others
as long as they're not ad hominem in nature. Fred's signature wasn't
rude to any one person, and was arguably accurate in it's content.

But what's more disturbing to me is that one religious person can
complain and have someone who's made a valuable contribution to
these lists removed. As such, I'm going to remove myself from this
list and the other openSuSE lists to which I've been subscribed for
many years. It's been fun and quite a ride, and I will miss the
contacts that I've made here.

I'd also like to extend an invitation to one and all to join another
off-topic mailing list. Fred and Bruce have joined, and I hope that
others will consider joining too. Everyone is welcome.

The sweet-haven domain name isn't an accident, it has always served
as a "haven" for waifs cast adrift on the Internet Seas. It's also
Popeye the Sailor Man's hometown, and I really, against all reason,
liked that movie with Robin Williams.

I hope to see you over on offtopic@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

Regards,
Lew

So you see the matter of sigs is not "childish".

If you also follow another thread in the list called "Sigs" started by
Per you will read that I admit in a post there that at the time I
supported Fred's banning and gave my reasons for doing so and which is
why I now am promoting the banning of the use of sigs to stop
unnecessary complaints about their contents by people like Patrick and
to stop people like Fred being banned simply because some religious
zealot complained.

If there were no sigs there would not be the chance for anyone to complain.

If there were no posts there would be nothing here to complain about. Or no good way to solve our respective problems either.

I disagreed with the banning of Fred at the time, and still do. Its been a while, but I seem to recall he would not back down, out of principle. That grew to a situation where he had no choice but to keep up his stance, thus no face saving way to go. He got banned from the list. Pitty. IIRC he did contribute to this list (and much good news on the OT list). My standpoint is this list should be more "open". If you see something you don't like, move on. Its not an email directed to any one person, but a multi user email list, supposedly focused on helping each other with opensuse issues.

Anyways, enough of that. I'm done with this thread.

Sorry to James for his video issues. Hope you find a good solution. I tried a few years ago to do some small video editing, but had to revert to my Macbook instead.
