However, this is not really the crux of the problem.
I think the problem is that sig *are* allowed in posts to the openSUSE lists - and this is particularly unwholesome because there are no rules governing what they may contain. Well, yes there is Basil - whatever rules and conventions we apply to what you write are also applied to your sig. But the "rules and conventions" are nothing more than "rules and conventions" and are not set in stone: they are simply guidelines which are subject to peer pressure to be "enforced". And to be "enforced" by whom? By one person who is persuaded to enforce them if he is lobbied to do so by some unknown person or persons and if he is in the mood to act. In other words, the process is simply SUBJECTIVE. Very true, but my main point was that whatever people write in their sigs is (or should be) treated exactly like the rest of the posting. There's no ground for treating the signature separately.
If you look very carefully at the end of a post you will see that there are 2 "--" with a space immediately after them but which I will not insert here to be on the safe side. These dashes indicate the end of the message. What is added after these dashes is unrelated to the actual message but is transmitted and displayed at the receiver's end as appearing to be part of the message. Back in "old days" such addons were frowned upon as they added to the length of a message which cost the Sysop (System Operator) of a BBS (Bulletin Board Service) money because all mail was sent via the telephone lines and mostly on timed telephone call rates. Now a days nobody gives a rat's because of broadband and because people accept that being wasteful is no longer a big deal - except to those who are still on dial-up connections. The text body of a message and the addon, the signature, are 2 separate things - and there is no need for the addon because it is not a mandatory appendage to make the message reach its destination.
